H. P. Blavatsky: The Secret Doctrine

Please note: The author of this site is not an expert on Theosophy. He has done some short research on the net, besides, of course, taking from what he has read in print.

A. General Overview

There seem to be various, different editions.

I. One has to take care not just to get an abridged one.

II. There seem to be differences as to the editions of the first two volumes. If you would like to stick to the first editions as originally publissed, you might want to look into facsimile-reprints, e.g. - very kind prices - of ULT (order here).

III. Also, the accuracy of the so called "3rd volume", published by the Theosophical Society in Adyar by and edited Annie Besant and others is sometimes questioned. Possibly Mme. Blavatsky did not deem the fragmentary and scattered notes, unedited by her, fit for publication. The volume might contain quite a lot of mistakes.

As to II and III, also see http://www.blavatskyarchives.com/sdiiipt1.htm; http://www.blavatskyarchives.com/sdiiitab.htmhttp://www.theosophy-nw.org/theosnw/theos/th-hpb14.htm and the introduction at http://www.theosophyweb.com/The%20Secret%20Doctrine with an overview over the various editions until then.

B. The Work itself and related works / information

There are various online editioms (despite there being various printed indices - it is very convenient to go to an online edition or download the text and then use the "search" function) and sites with further information. Be careful to get the right (see my remark here) and complete (!) editions You will have to find your way to what is best for you:

II. In German:

In German, too, it is not always easy to see whether an edition is abridged. Furthermore, one should take care to get a good translation, see

If one would like to buy translations into other languages, there is the danger of pretty "free" ones... As to this, see
Frank Reitemeyer: Neusprech auf dem Vormarsch ? Kritik zur Neuübersetzung der gekürzten
Geheimlehre des Adyar-Verlages. 3., erweiterte Auflage,  in:  Reihe Apologetik. Heft 1. Theosophisches Centralarchiv. You can find it online (be it legally or not).

Without judging whether they are good, I found, inter alia:
